Established in 1955, the mission of Kohrs Lonnemann Heil Engineers, PSC is to build quality relationships, environments and buildings centered around people. Our firm is not only driven by the designs we create, but ultimately by the spaces resulting from our work: places of healing, commerce, community, education, hospitality, business, and more. We are invested in these spaces as well as our clients’ aspirations in creating them. Our vision and driving passion is to continually redefine engineering by stepping out from behind the desk, humanizing building design, and building lasting relationships with our clients.

CORE COMPETENCIES

CONSTRUCTION ADMINISTRATION

When involved in construction administration, KLH manages the overall planning, coordination, and control of a project from start to finish – with the goal of producing a functional and viable project. We are involved in the initial design meetings. In the design phase, we perform drawing/specification review, focusing mainly on constructibility issues. In the construction phase we organize and lead pre-construction team meetings and participate in project coordination and process meetings. A field observation report, which will identify items discussed, observed, witnessed and resolved during site visits. Upon completion, our CA personnel walk through the building with the owner to identify any concerns, especially as they relate to warrantied systems.

MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Mechanical engineering encompasses the design, construction and use of machines.  Our engineers analyze problems to see how mechanical or thermal devices can help. We consider the use of the building and how electricity, lighting, heating and cooling will affect those working or living in the building.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

When thinking of electrical engineering, the thought that flashes through your mind is “that’s how the light turns on!” While it’s true, electrical engineering is much more. It is the design of electrical power systems ranging from large scale settings such as how power comes from a utility company to why the lights come on when you flip a light switch. Electrical engineers are in charge of designing power systems to ensure that buildings receive proper electrical distribution and all aspects of the building are properly powered. This includes lighting and associated lighting control, critical operations equipment, emergency backup power, power to receptacles, HVAC, computers, and water heaters. All are designed with future growth and flexibility of the space in mind.

LIGHTING DESIGN

The KLH lighting design studio focuses on providing the perfect balance of function and aesthetics in our lighting systems solutions. Our qualified staff brings over 30 years’ experience to your project.  Our mission is to provide innovative, responsible lighting design solutions for the design community; architects, interior designers, landscape architects, engineers and municipalities in our region and nationwide. We are committed to providing exceptional quality and appropriate value to our clients.

Four of our staff members hold the Lighting Certified (LC) credential from the NCQLP and are members of the Illuminating Engineering Society. We have LEED experience on many projects, at all levels – Certified, Silver, Gold and Platinum Certifications. We also have certified LEED Accredited Professionals on staff who coordinate between all disciplines to provide excellence in engineering and design.

Our lighting studio specializes in thoughtful lighting design, integrated into architecture and related building systems by working collaboratively in the design team with the client’s design team. Our design services are supported by continuous learning and by maintaining state-of-the-art technology to meet clients’ needs on projects of all sizes. Our lighting professionals are accomplished in design of renovations, rehabilitations, additions, and new construction using Revit, AutoCAD, and Design Master.

Throughout all market segments, the lighting designers find it imperative that our work is functional as well as complete. Therefore our quality lighting designs meet life safety and energy code regulations. Services include lighting control solutions, daylight harvesting, and dimming systems capable of interfacing with audio/visual systems. The lighting staff provides economic analysis of the lighting and controls systems, and are experienced in creating virtual models of lighting outcomes via the most up-to-date software.

REFRIGERATION

To a consumer or end user, a refrigeration system is nothing more than a large fridge or freezer. Adjusting the thermostat simply raises or lowers the temperature within the space. Many facilities require refrigeration systems, most notably: grocery stores, convenience stores, distribution facilities, restaurants, and even warehouses. The installed system will allow the end user to control temperature; however, the system requirements vary from each project based on process, standards, and existing conditions. An engineered refrigeration system addresses the specific temperature and humidity requirements of both product and space while taking into consideration many design considerations. These considerations include: cost, installation, equipment selection, refrigerant selection, oil return, acoustics, power consumption, code requirements and regulations.

TECHNOLOGY

The first thought for most when we say we have a special service offering in technology is “Oh, you’re into computers”.  While it is true we use a lot of computers at KLH, we do not specify them.  What we do however is design the systems that help people in the built environment communicate.  There is a team of experts that form our Communication Information Technology (CIT) department.  What do the occupants of buildings need to communicate and how do they do that?  KLH designs the systems into your facility that enable you to communicate outside your walls (video- and tele-communications/computer network), see the world around you and know who’s coming/going (video surveillance & access control), present and educate (audio-video systems), and provide messages to occupants (digital signage).  These systems and others like them, enable you to employ the built environment to receive and send your organizational communications.  Our technology team carries the specialized training and credentials to guide you in these system selections.  What do you need to say and how do you want to say it?  We can help create the facility that transmits your message.

“Delivering value to building owners and tenants by improving systems, increasing efficiency and creating quality environments through the integration of engineering and energy management”

Commercial buildings account for nearly one-fifth of the U.S. energy consumption—half of that energy is consumed by office buildings, retail space and educational facilities. Add to that thousands of healthcare facilities and hospitality properties and the challenges to manage these expenses become evident. The opportunity to implement energy efficiency and cost-reduction services is ripe for building owners across all market segments wrestling with the problem of maintaining mechanical and electrical systems while realizing healthy profits amidst the reality of increasing costs of labor, material and taxes.  KLH Energy Solutions helps customers reduce costs associated with energy and operational expenses.
